CS2’s Major qualification race was in the focus this week as NAVI secured important wins in Bucharest and GamerLegion changed captains. ESL and BLAST revealed upcoming tournament matchups, while Major winner Qikert moved into coaching. Elsewhere, Evil Geniuses announced plans to close, which surely is a significant departure from the wider esports industry.
This Week’s Highlights
- NAVI strengthen Singapore Major qualification bid. NAVI defeated FURIA 2–0 on October 25 to reach a 2-0 record at PGL Masters Bucharest. The victory earned them 85 Valve Regional Standings points and lifted them to 11th in Europe. That gave their Major invitation campaign a substantial boost after they entered the tournament under qualification pressure.

- GamerLegion replace Snax with shalfey. GamerLegion announced Aleksandr “shalfey” Marenov as their new in-game leader on October 21, hours after benching Janusz “Snax” Pogorzelski. The move gives shalfey his first international leadership role following spells with domestic lineups. He takes over after a disappointing qualifier exit left GamerLegion’s Singapore Major qualification hopes severely damaged.

- Qikert leaves playing behind for Spirit Academy coaching role. Aleksei “Qikert” Golubev joined Spirit Academy as coach on October 21, ending a playing career spanning almost a decade. The Kazakh rifler won the 2022 IEM Rio Major with Outsiders. His appointment brings Major-winning experience to Spirit’s development team as he begins a new chapter behind the players.

- ESL reveals IEM Beijing groups and opening matches. ESL announced the draw on October 20 for the November 2-8 tournament, with NAVI facing Falcons and FURIA meeting FaZe among the opening fixtures. Sixteen teams will compete in two double-elimination groups. Group winners advance directly to the semi-finals, while the second- and third-placed teams enter the quarter-finals.

- Vitality and Falcons drawn together at BLAST Rivals. BLAST revealed the groups and opening matches for its November 11-15 Hong Kong event on October 20. Vitality face Falcons, while Legacy meet FURIA in Group A. Spirit play FUT and MOUZ face G2 in Group B, establishing the opening route towards the eight-team tournament’s six-team playoffs.

- Evil Geniuses announce November closure. CEO Chris DeAppolonio announced on October 20 that Evil Geniuses had begun winding down operations ahead of a November 2 shutdown. He cited limited sponsorship and rising competition costs. The closure will remove a longstanding esports organisation whose Counter-Strike history included major tournament titles and a spell atop the world rankings.
