Another week where CS2 led the esports headlines. ESL outlined changes to IEM Cologne and prepared Pro League’s return to an arena. Envy returned to Counter-Strike, FUT confirmed a new AWPer, and two experienced leaders moved into new chapters.
Here are five key developments announced during September 28-October 4.
This Week’s Highlights
- ESL announces expanded IEM Cologne 2027 playoffs. On October 1, ESL confirmed an eight-team playoff bracket across four days at LANXESS Arena, alongside the event’s first 360-degree stage. Scheduled for August 4-15, the tournament will feature best-of-three matches and a best-of-five final. The format gives eight teams a place in the arena phase.

- ESL Pro League prepares its arena return. ESL’s September 30 announcement confirmed that Season 24 would begin on October 3 in Katowice, with 16 teams competing on LAN. Eight teams advance to the October 9-11 playoffs at Spodek Arena. This marks Pro League’s first arena stage since 2019, with $1 million in total winnings and an ESL Grand Slam VII point at stake.

- Envy returns with the former 3DMAX roster. On September 29, Envy announced its return to Counter-Strike after almost six years away. Envy signed the former 3DMAX lineup. The move brings the organisation back to French CS, where it won its 2015 Major title. The roster joins Envy while competing for qualification to the upcoming Singapore Major.

- FUT confirms SunPayus as its new AWPer. FUT announced the signing of Álvaro “SunPayus” García on October 1, replacing Nikita “cmtry” Samolotov in the starting lineup. The former G2 player returns to competition after being benched during the summer. His arrival adds experience to the Esports World Cup finalists ahead of their next scheduled tournament, PGL Masters Bucharest.

- Snappi becomes HEROIC’s head coach. HEROIC appointed Marco “Snappi” Pfeiffer on October 1, replacing Joonas “doto” Forss, who moved to the bench. The appointment ends Snappi’s playing career of nearly two decades and brings him back to an organisation he previously represented. HEROIC now enters the closing stretch before Singapore Major invitations with new leadership behind the team.
